iFixit's Open Repair Manuals

iFixit has decided to open all of its repair manuals to the world for general use - a collection which includes 91 Mac models, 34 iPods, and a couple of iPhones! Frighteningly, they have 154,556 images (including revision history and thumbnails) and over 1,000 step-by-step guides on their servers - so this is no small collection of data we are talking about here. You might wonder why they are doing this - and their argument is that there is no sustainability in most electronics devices currently, and repairing them is one way to help try and achieve that. Of course, being a parts retailer is where the commercial kickback happens, but still it's a very noble gesture indeed.Well done, iFixit!

VoiceCentral bringing Google Voice to iPhone

Google Voice app VoiceCentral will soon make a return to the iPhone as a new web-app. VoiceCentral developer Riverturn calls their reincarnated app the VoiceCentral Black Swan Edition. The return of VoiceCentral to the iPhone is clearly a middle finger in Apple's general direction. In early 2010, Riverturn will go live with their web-based app, which integrates all of Google Voice's features with the iPhone in ways that the Google Voice mobile website just can't. Google Voice apps were banned from the AppStore for reasons that weren't too clear. The service allowed users to give out one Google Voice phone number that automatically rang multiple phones at the same time. It also allowed for voicemail transcription and allowed users send SMS text messages on Google's dime. The decision to pull Google Voice apps put Apple in hot water as consumer criticism moved the FCC to kick off an investigation into Apple's motives for banning Google Voice apps.

Near To Here - Travel Guide App for iPhone

Near To Here, an iPhone travel guide application, will be released today by its creator, De La Plata Enterprises. The app automatically alerts users when they are near interesting attractions or historical sites and delivers relevant information about the location. Using reverse geolocation look-up technology, Near To Here knows exactly where a user is located and what interesting stuff is around them. As a user passes by landmarks - both renowned and obscure, they are alerted with the Wikipedia entry of whatever is near - allowing them to discover and learn as they wander through new or old places. This innovative use of geolocation technology means that users can learn about places of interest they may recognize, but can also learn surprising facts about lesser-known places, such as hidden gems in foreign cities or historical sites in their own hometowns.

iPhone : The Most Owned Mobile Phone in the U.S.

The iPhone is without a doubt one of the most popular mobile phones anywhere today. And based on the number of mobile phone ownerships released by the Nielsen company, the iPhone is topping them all in the U.S. right now. About 4.0% of mobile phone owners have an iPhone while the RIM Blackberry 8300 Series is not far behind with 3.7%. With those numbers, Apple would do well not to take it easy. Though it wasn't mentioned, it is safe to assume that these numbers may have consolidated the iPhone 3G and 3GS in one product line. Regardless, the iPhone is still leading in preference but you can be sure that RIM will do everything in its power to try and whittle that lead, if not overcome it!

Unreal Engine 3 is now on iPhone 3GS

The Unreal Engine will now be running on the iPhone 3GS. According to AppleInsider, Epic Games has recently demonstrated the proof-of-concept to AnandTech with a playable demo. Seemingly, the first-person shooter runs a modified level from the game Unreal Tournament, and employs dual-touch controls.Much to thrill, it's the same engine that runs stimulating games like BioShock, Gears of War, and Mass Effect, now on the iPhone. Apparently, the game features a virtual thumbstick on the left side of the touchscreen to control character movement. Users can now aim and shoot at enemies on screen merely by using their right thumb. In fact, the 3D demo actuates Open GL ES 2.0 which is believed to be available only on the iPhone 3GS and new iPod touch. Reportedly, Epic Games plans to make the engine available for licensing to companies who want to make or port games to the iPhone and iPod touch at some point. For the moment, Epic isn't contemplating to release any games for the platform, reveals AppleInsider.

Evernote for iPhone now with version 3.2

Evernote is out with a new version of its iPhone app just in time for the holidays. Many things are changed and we love it. Here's what's new:
# Local note caching - this includes both notes that you create AND view on your iPhone.
# Offline notebooks - if you're a Premium user you can take ALL your notes with you. Simply adjust settings in the "Sync" tab and go through your notes while on a plane or other place where network connection is unavailable. Of course, if you're going to sync all your notes and you have quite a few of them, make sure to do that while in a hotspot.
# In-app purchase of Evernote Premium - that's in case you want a mobile offline access to your notes along with other goodies the Premium plan offers.
# Length of audio note recordings is doubled to 20 minutes!
# Offline/local search - very handy especially if you're going to have all (or most) of your notes stored on your iPhone/iPod Touch. Of course, if you're using some data connection, the search extends to your online notes, as well.
# Editing rich-text notes - finally, you can edit formatted notes that also may include pictures or attachments.
# Brand new "Sync" tab which comes with real-time status of all sync operations.
# New "All Notes" button to get back to all your notes with a single tap.
# Evernote is now faster. They say every aspect of the app is improved - including searching, syncing, making new notes, browsing, etc.
# Additional languages - Evernote for iPhone is now available in English, French, German and Russian with limited (but quickly growing) support for Japanese, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Swedish, Portuguese and Chinese.
You can grab Evernote for iPhone from AppStore link. And as always, make sure to reboot your phone after installing a new version of Evernote.

Next Gen Apple iPhone with 5 Mega Pixel Camera

According to Digitimes sources Apple have placed an order for a number of 5 megapixel CMOS image sensors to be used in next generation Apple products. This could mean that if an iPhone is launched next year that it will sport a better camera than previous models. Anonymous sources have stated that the order was specifically for the next generation iPhone due out in the middle of 2010. Although no official information has been provided by Apple on this case, and it never will be until they announce the phone mid next year, we are left with just speculation or rumour at the moment.

iPhone game developer Tapulous earned a cool $1 million a month from AppStore sales for its popular Tap Tap Revenge iPhone game. The app has been installed more than 20 million times and was developed by a team of only 20 employees. Money funnels into Tapulous's coffers by means of premium (for pay) games, in-app advertisements and in-app song purchases. The company's success has even attracted $2.8 million in investment from the likes of Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff and venture capital firm Khosla Ventures. Wake Me Shake Train Alarm app

Now here's an iPhone app for the masses - the Wake Me Shake Train Alarm app that will help alert snoozers on Japan's famous trains that they have arrived at their stop. Developed by iPhone programmer Warwick Pearmund, this $2.99 software requires you to inform it of the station where you want to get off alongside how far away you are from said station when the alarm rings. Once the relevant information has been keyed in, the app will go all out to sense the right parameters, kicking in at the right moment so that you will achieve the maximum amount of beauty sleep during your daily commute. Just remember not to get groped or pick pocketed on Japan's notoriously crowded trains during rush hour!
